Family Ministry

Partnering With Parents to Make Disciples

:: Partnering With Parents to Make Disciples ::

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. _Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Awaken's Family Ministry...

includes children and students ages 0-18, preschool through high school.  In all these ministries, we have the same mission: To partner with parents to glorify God by making disciples.  We believe the bible is clear that parents are the primary disciple-makers in the lives of their children, our hope is to partner with parents in their pursuit of this mission.  It is our desire to come alongside parents in the discipleship process.

God calls the family to play a vital role in the discipling of their children.  How this is accomplished varies from family to family and is unique in each home.  Family discipleship isn't one-size-fits-all, and it isn't easy!  Even the most intentional parents may find themselves at a loss as to how to being and sustain a discipleship process within the home.  Awaken wants to come alongside parents to help them craft their own approach to family discipleship.  Though each family is unique, we believe vibrant family discipleship doesn't have to be something to be intimidated by or afraid of.

We have various resources to help you personally disciple your child(ren). Click HERE to begin using these resources.

We encourage families to worship together during our weekend gatherings.  This is especially true for middle and high school students as we purposefully do not offer anything for this age group during any of our Sunday gatherings.  We hope to integrate them into the life of the church where they can live out our mission with their parents and other adults.  Another practical way we encourage family worship, is having our elementary age kids in our Sunday gatherings during holiday weekends.  This gives families a time to worship together.

We were introduced to a family discipleship concept that we think is an invaluable way to cultivate vibrant family discipleship. TIME - MOMENTS - MILESTONES

TIME - Create family discipleship time.

Parents build intentional time into the rhythm of their family life for the purpose of thinking about, talking about and living out the gospel.  Parents who leverage "time", prioritize gathering their family together regularly - daily or weekly - to read the Bible, pray, sing, and talk together.  Depending on the ages of your children and your weekly/monthly rhythm, this regularly occurring time might vary from in what it emphasizes and accomplishes.

MOMENTS - Capture family discipleship moments

Parents can leverage and capture key opportunities during everyday life for the purpose of gospel-centered conversations.  Parents who utilize "moments" live their day with their eyes and ears open for "teachable moments" to capitalize on for the purpose of discipleship.  A good grade is more than a proud moment but an opportunity to talk about how God give us gifts to be used to build His kingdom.  An argument between siblings can be used as a chance to talk about respect, pride, submission to one another out of love.  A sickness can be used to teach on prayer, healing, trust.  Parents who make use of "moments" intentionally look for ways to connect everyday events to gospel truths.

MILESTONES - Recognize and remember family discipleship milestones

We all like celebrations and parties.  "Milestones" helps parents mark and make occasions to celebrate significant spiritual milestones of God's work in the life of the family and/or child(ren).  We believe it's important for parents to leverage milestones when their kids accomplish something big or small.  For example, parents might leverage significant birthday's, spiritual birthdays, baptisms, trips, anniversaries to reenforce the gospel to their family.  It's like looking back through family pictures and you have this celebration of remembrance.
